31 Days: “remember”

Day 11 of 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.

Today’s word is “remember” – five minutes on the timer… and go!

Jury’s out on this one. I’m not sure if it’s easier to remember or do what Paul says: forgetting what lies behind and pushing toward the prize…

I guess it depends on what you’re remembering. If it’s good? Then yeah! Bring it on.

But if you’re remembering deep pain and traumatic experiences – then remembering is no fun. At all.

I know of a friend slogging through the mess of her trauma and she knows that having to remember her life is beneficial for her in the long run but the very worst idea in this real live moment. So she boldly and bravely – with no small amount of tears – goes forth and remembers.

Remembering can be sweet and of the memory-lane variety. Picking the sweet moments like the flowers they are… remembering the sweet baby cheeks and big blue eyes and those squishy little hands. There are also the moments of frustration with a bit of sleep deprivation mixed in for good measure and you cringe at the things you said and remembering becomes bitter.

The beautiful thing about remembering is that there is one thread that goes through each experience whether we know it or not – God’s grace. It’s mostly easy to find it in the sweet times, and it’s still there in the awful. Never an easy cliche but a desperate truth holding us up.

…and time’s up!
